How to be less worried about the sun

by | 8 Apr. 2021 | Sun Series | 7 comments

Start with getting to know how it makes us shine

The sun is a glorious thing. It gives life to our seas, stirs our atmosphere, generates our weather patterns, and gives energy to the growing green plants that provide the food and oxygen for life on earth.

Sun worship can be found throughout history. Ancient civilisations, like the Egyptians, Romans, Druids, Aztecs and Incas loved and worshipped it.

How confusing is it, then, that the sun is a thing to be worshipped and we say its’ the best medicine, yet there is so much fear associated with it?? VERY!

Although the risks of overexposure are real, they have come to disproportionately dominate most of the conversation around sun exposure. In this series, I am going to teach you about all the great benefits of direct sunlight so you will be able to fully enjoy your sun exposure while feeling confident that you are not overdoing it and damaging your skin.

Nothing is more important to us than the sun. It ensures we thrive, next you’ll see how.

in-depth

SUNLIGHT RULES THE RHYTHMS OF YOUR BODY

How does the sun directly impact your health and wellbeing biologically?

Let’s start with your 24-hour biological clock.

The tissues and organs of our body operate according to biological rhythms. Our biological clocks keep the body processes running according to a schedule. One of these clocks, the circadian rhythm, is inseparable from the sun and therefore our health and wellbeing.

PRACTICAL AND ACTIONABLE TAKE-AWAYS

The sun rules your 24-hour circadian rhythm which – in turn – rules your:

Appetite

hormone levels

body temperature

blood pressure

daily performance level

sleep

detoxification process

Do you want to improve your immunity? Feel more energetic? Lose weight? Sleep better?

NO MATTER your wellness goal, you will achieve it more easily and happily if you get yourself outside and into daylight between 12-2pm. Indirect sunlight is as important for your biological rhythyms as direct sunlight.

Did you know…?

Exposure to morning sunlight helps raise body temperature to normal. It enhances numerous brain activities including increased alertness and better mood, cognition and vitality!

So before you get out your sunscreen, let your skin absorb some precious sunlight:
20 minutes on 40% of your body – other than your face – is a good guideline.

Do pay attention to how long it takes you to burn because sunburn does damage your skin – take note of this signal – it’s a message from your body that this is your natural limit.

IN SUMMARY….

It’s not only plants that absorb and metabolise sun. Humans do, too

Sun gives us the oh-so-important vitamin D – and so much more!

Direct and unfiltered exposure to the sun (without sunscreen) is good – not bad, as we have come to believe. It’s actually essential to our wellbeing!

As with all things, you do have to be reasonable (but not fearful) about sun exposure and you must know your own tolerance to it. We will explore this more in a later issue.
